Moonlight – Growing up gay in a tough neighborhood, shy Chiron (Aleex Hibbert) is called “Little”. Local drug dealer Juan (Mahershala Ali), takes him under his wing and along with girlfriend Teresa (Janelle Monae) provides him with love and protection. Still, Juan is not above selling Little’s mom Paula (Naomi Harris) whatever she needs.
Told in three parts, the second section has Chiron (Ashton Sanders) as a teenager constantly being picked on and bullied. His first sexual experience is with Kevin (Jharell Jerome) who nicknames Chiron “Black” and later is forced to beat him up.
In the final part, after having served time, Black (Trevante Rhodes) has gone from a 90 lb weakllng to a fine looking buffed out dude with a mouth full of silver and is following in Juan’s footsteps. He reconnects with Kevin (Andre Holland) only to find that Kevin has hooked up with a woman and has a daughter.
A very good movie – not sure I’d vote it Best Picture, but it is very good. The jive talk is hard to understand. Excellent performances from almost everyone. I especially liked Naomi Harris. I know it’s artsy to have the camera up really close and make some shots blurry, but that just hurts my eyes and gives me a headache.
