Live By Night

Live By Night – Fed up with being told what to do in the military, when he gets out Joseph Coughlin’s (Ben Affleck) becomes an outlaw even though his dad (Brendan Gleeson) is a cop. It’s 1920s and Boston is busting out with crime. Joe is propositioned by an Italian mobster Maso Pescatore (Remo Girone) to help take down another gangster (Robert Glenister) whose girlfriend Emma Gould (Sienna Miller) Joe is in love with. He turns Maso down – Emma sets Joe up. Lots of shooting, killing, robbing, Joe drives the getaway car, but not very well. Joe goes to jail.
Second chance comes along. Rum in Ybor City and the living is easy. Loving the beautiful, black Graciela (Zoe Saldana) is even easier. Ku Klux Klan stops in. Things get messy. Double crossers double cross.
You sort of feel you’ve seen this story before. You just can’t trust those Mafia dudes. There is some gorgeous scenery and some of the finest cars ever. Affleck does a good job directing and he looks good – like he’s been freshened up a bit. Elle Fanning is good, too, as the virginal-looking heroin addict turned religious fanatic.
