Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them – J.K. Rowling’s prequel to the Harry Potter series – a textbook that Harry was required to read. Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) is in NYC with a suitcase full of creatures when he meets up with a baker (Dan Folger) and some witches (Katherine Waterston and Allison Sudol). Bad guys are after the witches and an especially bad guy (Colin Farrell) is after the special power of a particular young person (Ezra Miller).

The first part feels like everyone took a small shot of Ritalin to slow them down. Midway, it picks up and things start flying lickety-split. You’ll recognize some of the so-called beasts from the Potter movies. My favorite is a little platypus-like critter who escapes from his suitcase and goes after shiny things, like gold & silver coins, diamond jewelry so you know she’s gotta be a girl.

Farrell has the second worst villain haircut ever (first goes to Javier Bardem in No Country) and still looks mighty pretty. It’s enjoyable but a little lackluster. Beasts are not menacing at all – maybe one or two. The very ending is expected and sweet, almost Hallmark-y.
