Magnificent Seven

Magnificent Seven – When someone says “They don’t make movies like they used to”, tell them they just did. Mag 7 is an excellent remake of the 1960’s classic. Sam Chisholm (Denzel Washington) pulls together a team of legendary outlaws to fight off a nasty, nasty man (Peter Sarsgaard) who wants to take over a town and mine its gold (kind of like NC and fracking).
It’s a diverse group with an Indian, a Mexican, a Baptist, an Irishman, a black, a white, and a woman.

Much of it is flat-out fun (He’s just mad because his mama gave him the name Earl.) There’s plenty of shooting and killing but you feel it’s justified. Filled with bravery and courage, it’s an old fashioned movie of good guys versus bad guys.

I think it’s been a while since a Western received notice at the awards shows but this one might make it. Great ensemble cast: Ethan Hawke to Vincent D’Onofrio, who’s put on a few lbs., to Manuel Garcia-Rulfo and Martin Sensmeier. Denzel should be nominated since he’s very, very good and probably will because he’s black. Chris Pratt, though in my opinion, is the stand out here.
