The Nice Guys

The Nice Guys – Two low-rent detectives, Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) and Holland March (Ryan Gosling), form an alliance to find a missing person whose life is in danger. Amelia (Margaret Qualley) made a porn movie to tell the world how the Big 3 automakers as well as lawmakers knew for years how badly they were polluting the environment (Porn as a platform? Just go with it) and now a lot of people want to get a hold of the film before it’s released.

Set in the late 70s, it has all that decade’s fashion…remember white pants suits on men…and music…remember that awful Pina Colada song. One young lady (Yaya DaCosta) has killer arms and a Diana Ross hairdo. Crowe is a bit porky with a whiskey-tinged voice. Gosling is quite good at comedy. There’s a smattering of slapstick and a touch of crass. Shootings with enough bullets to take out the state of Rhode Island, beatings, car chases and crashes.

It has a whole lot of funny, much of it irreverent. Once when March is chastised for “taking the Lord’s name in vain”, he said, “No, it was useful.” For those who don’t like language, stay away. I’m thinking Healy & March will ride again.
