Anomalisa – This is my first ever R-rated animated film. Not sure why, but I went in thinking it was going to be one of those magical Japanese fairy-tale films. Instead, Michael Stone (David Thewlis) is a highly successful customer service expert/author who seems on the verge of a major breakdown. He hears voices and has strange dreams. He meets Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and feels a connection with her, possibly because she can sing “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” in Italian.

The characters are pretty real looking in a robotic kind of way. They walk like old, arthritic people. Other than Michael and Lisa, all of the roles are voiced by Tom Noonan which means both men and women sound just alike. I think the story is wide open to interpretation so you could think it’s genius, brilliant and meaningful or you could think it’s just weird.
