Creed – Son of Apollo Creed, Adonis “Donnie” Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) has been brought up in group homes and is one angry young man. Eventually Apollo’s widow, Mary Ann, (Phylicia Rashad) rescues him and educates him. But boxing is in his blood. He seeks out his dad’s friend Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and pesters him until he agrees to be his trainer.

Nicknamed “Hollywood”, Donnie pushes… not in a bad way… Rocky into lining up fights for him. Rocky finds out he’s in another fight of his own. Love interest Bianca is played by the lovely Tessa Thompson. Both Rashad and Stallone do good jobs here. Directed and written by Ryan Coogler, it has a definite black feel. That’s not a racist statement, it’s a racial statement.

It doesn’t have the same snap and energy the Rocky movies did. There are the expected beat-the-opponent-to-a-pulp moments. The best Rocky-like scene is when Donnie runs with a motorcycle group who then circle him outside Rocky’s window yelling “Fight, Fight” or at least that’s what I think they are yelling.
