Freeheld – A love story between a detective and a mechanic. Both are women, and therein lies the rub. Laurel (Julianne Moore), a constant smoker, is diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and wants to assign her pension to her partner Stacie (Ellen Page). Even though the law in New Jersey gave the county the option to grant benefits to domestic partners, the a-holes here used every excuse they could find to deny her.

Laurel with Farrah Fawcett hair just wants what’s fair. Work partner Dane (Michael Shannon) is one of the few cops who give her friendship and support once they learn she’s a dyke. Steve Carell plays an enthusiastic gay Jew from New Jersey who chants to the freeholders that they “have the power.”

I don’t understand why people are so afraid of homosexuality. I’m pretty sure it’s not catching. A pretty cool thing was when an Episcopalian father (or maybe he was Catholic) tells the panel of judges he can quote what Jesus said about homosexuality. Total silence. That’s right, Jesus never said anything about it.
