Black Mass

Black Mass – James “Whitey” Bulger as played by Johnny Depp is one nasty piece of work. He started out as a vicious small time mobster who loves his family. After his young son dies, any decency he may have had goes to hell. FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton), who grew up with Bulger in South Boston, makes a deal with him to turn informant. Bulger uses the FBI to his own advantage; Connolly takes his idea of loyalty to a whole new level.

Whitey rises to a major player in the Irish mob. He’s into drugs, racketeering, jai alai, and murder. Anyone who disses him, he has killed. Sometimes he offs them himself. Sick and creepy, he’ll cut a throat or cold-bloodedly shoot two or three in public. After a while, his own henchmen can’t take it and are ready to rat him out.

Good cast. Benedict Cumberbatch is brother Billy Bulger, a state senator. Dakota Johnson is Whitey’s wife. Kevin Bacon is Connolly’s boss. Julianne Nicholson is Connolly’s wife Marianne. It’s got its share of graphic violence and lots of effing. Depp’s performance is one of his best.
