I’ll See You In My Dreams

I’ll See You In My Dreams – Carol (Blythe Danner) has been widowed 20 years. Her semi-satisfying life includes bridge and golf with friends (Rhea Perlman, Mary Kay Place, June Squib) who live in a nearby retirement home, and lots of wine. When Carol has to put her 14 year-old dog down, the dog does a great job of looking pathetic. She then begins a friendship-only relationship with pool boy Lloyd (Martin Starr). Lloyd, not yet sure where his life is going, admires Carol’s singing talent. Then along comes Bill (Sam Elliott) and Carol really begins to perk up, as most women over the age of (cough, cough) would. Bill seems in a rush to push their involvement forward. You’ll find out why.

There’s some humor here – one of the best scenes is when the “girls” try some medicinal marijuana, go on a munchies shopping trip and get stopped by a cop. There’s also kind of a somber feel overall. It shows that life does go on and it can be good, no matter what. But I’m not buying that a dog can replace Sam Elliott.
