5 To 7

5 To 7 – Apparently the French have this quirky little custom of keeping the hours from 5 to 7 p.m. as a “free zone” for married couples. When 24-year-old aspiring writer Brian Bloom (Anton Yelchin) is dazzled by Arielle (Berenice Marlohe) he’s surprised to find that she’s 33 and married with two children. He’s even more surprised to find that she’s quite willing to enter into an affair with him as long as their time together is confined to those two hours and that he follows a few simple rules.

Husband Valery (Lambert Wilson) stops Brian one day, thanks him for bringing an extra spark to his wife’s eyes, and invites him to a family dinner. An uncredited Julian Bond is one of the guests. It’s just so very “continental.” Brian goes along with it for a while until he decides he wants Arielle all to himself. His parents, played by Frank Langella and Glenn Close, are captivated by Arielle but can’t quite wrap their minds around this ouverture d’esprit.

It’s a sweet, funny film about love and life, a little draggy in places, and has a “The Way We Were” ending.
