The Theory of Everything

The Theory of Everything – It starts out as a sweet boy-meets-girl in Cambridge, England. The boy named Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) is brilliant and Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones) is not too shabby in the smarts department either. Their main disagreement is about God. At first it appears Stephen just has a club foot or something like that. Then he finds out he has a motor neuron disease aka Lou Gehrig’s and is given only two years to live. Jane pushes him to not give up and insists she’s up to the challenge of caring for him.

After several years of marriage, the only physical activity Stephen is capable of is his husbandly duty. When she’s pregnant with their third child and Stephen is confined to a wheelchair, she’s ready to give up. First, help comes along in the form of church music director Jonathon (Charlie Cox). Next it’s red-haired Elaine (Maxine Peake). Neither one is good for the Hawking’s marriage.

All the while Stephen’s brain is working on the big bang theory, black holes, and time. How difficult it must have been for him to have so much intelligence and not be able to control his body. Redmayne’s portrayal is close to brilliant. Now in his early 70’s, the famous physicist is still trying, like Cher, to figure out how to turn back time.
