This Is Where I Leave You

This Is Where I Leave You – Judd Altman (Jason Bateman) has a perfect life until he goes home to find his wife Quinn (Abigail Spencer) in bed with his boss Wade (Dax Shepard). Next he gets a call from his sister Wendy (Tina Fey) that their dad has died. Mom (Jane Fonda) tells all the siblings their father’s dying wish is that they sit Shiva. They’re not Jewish. Wendy says he’s a Jewish atheist.

Mom is a famous psychologist and has written a couple of best-selling books. She’s also added some humongous boobs and is very open about her and everyone else’s sex life. Adam Driver is younger brother Phillip, immature “people person”, who brings rich, older girlfriend Tracy (Connie Britton) to the wake. Older brother Paul (Corey Stall) and his wife Alice have been unsuccessfully trying to have a baby. Wendy still has feelings for her first boyfriend Horry (Timothy Olyphant) who suffered a brain injury when they were dating. Wendy’s small son uses his training toilet in plain sight inside and outside.

This all adds up to lots of fun. There’s a great scene where the three brothers get high in the temple’s classroom. Another good scene takes place in the hospital when Judd gets into a fight with Wade. Olyphant’s role is small but first rate – he knows his brain doesn’t work like it should, both hating and accepting his fate. Bateman is his sweet, funny, likable self. Ms. Fonda looks great except for her udders. It’s an entertaining adult family movie.
