Palo Alto

Palo Alto – High schoolers April, Teddy, Fred, and Emily attend a lot of unsupervised parties. They get high, drink, and make out. They practically eat cigarettes. April (Emma Roberts – Julia’s niece) has a crush on her creepy coach (James Franco) who takes advantage of her. She lives with her even creepier stepdad (Val Kilmer) and mom. Teddy (Jack Kilmer-yes, Val’s son) is shy and stoned and desperately needs guidance. His best friend Fred (Nat Wolff) is seriously effed up, slams his car straight into a wall, and hallucinates regularly. Emily (Zoe Levin) is willing to have sex with any and every guy she meets.

These poor kids seem to be so lost and so troubled about something. I kept thinking “where are the parents.” Both Teddy and Fred seem to be somewhat talented, Teddy as an artist, Fred as a musician. April and Emily are pretty and smart. Being a teenager is really taking a toll on all of them.

The movie is based on the “Palo Alto Stories” by James Franco and directed by Gia Coppola (granddaughter of Francis Ford).
