Le Weekend

Le Weekend – Nick (Jim Broadbent) and Meg (Lindsay Duncan) are in Paris to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. Right away, I got the feeling that Meg was in a manic stage of bi-polarism, and Nick kind of mentions it sometime later. She chooses a luxury hotel to stay in, and runs out on the bill in a five-star restaurant. Nick says things like “I’m amazed at how mediocre I’ve become” and Meg announces that “a young man not entirely retarded hit on her.”

It’s a well-acted, grown-up kind of movie. Jeff Goldblum plays their successful friend Morgan in an excruciatingly self-important way. Broadbent is deliciously funny when he sings and dances in private and even more so when he gets high with Morgan’s son.

There are several places when you can’t hear what’s being said. Are sound editors a thing of the past?
