The Great Beauty

The Great Beauty – After having written one highly successful book, Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo) has spent the rest of his life around pseudo artistes. A poet who says “poetic vibrations cannot be described with the vulgarity of words.” A naked performer who head butts a stone wall. Mardi Gras-style partying from dusk to dawn. A pre-teen who throws paint on a canvas, swirls it around and makes millions.

Now 65, he begins to question his life of doing nothing or at least I think that’s what he’s supposed to be doing. It’s all a mishmash of bits and pieces. A soon to be pope who spouts recipes, an almost saint who eats roots because roots are important. This is up for Best Foreign Film and has had rave reviews from those who are apparently much more intelligent than I am. Set in Rome, it does have a beautiful background.
