Out Of The Furnace

Out Of The Furnace – Russell Baze (Christian Bale) is a hard-working blue collar guy, takes care of his dying dad, loves his girlfriend Lena (Zoe Saldana) and his loser brother Rodney (Casey Affleck).  One too many drinks one night puts him in prison after he crashes into a car, killing a mother and child.   Rodney is f’ed up after four tours in Iraq, wants a quick way to make money.  Talks “promoter” John Petty (Willem Dafoe) into setting him up with a bare-fisted fight with a mountain group of inbreds, headed up by Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson).

This is loaded with brutality and long dramatic pauses. There are contrasting shots of Russell and his uncle (Sam Shepard) out deer hunting and Rodney being slaughtered at the same time.   Harrelson is at his meanest and vilest.  Forest Whitaker as Sheriff Wesley Barnes is both tough and gentle.  Bale is outstanding as always.  Lots of language and blood.  Directed by Scott Cooper and produced by Ridley Scott – so you kind of know what to expect.
