Dallas Buyers Club

Dallas Buyers Club – It’s 1985, Rock Hudson recently died, and Ron Woodruff (Matthew McConaughey) is a hard-living, hard drinking, cocaine snorting Texan who has unprotected sex with any woman he can.  He can’t believe that he, a died-in-the-wool homophobic, is diagnosed with AIDS.  Neither can he believe his friends turn on him and start calling him a faggot.

He soon finds that AZT, the drug approved by the FDA to fight AIDS, is actually killing him.  A doctor in Mexico tells him how a combination of vitamins, healthy eating and a non-toxic protein is a much better choice.  He starts bringing the unapproved drugs in to the US and sells memberships to his buyers club which really pisses the medical industry and the FDA off – they can’t make any money off this.

McConaughey lost 50 pounds off his already slim frame for this role.  Most of the time, he looks awful but he still has that cocky, swaggering attitude.  Rayon (Jared Leto) a transvestite tells him he’s handsome in a “white trash, dumb kind of way.”   Jennifer Garner plays Dr. Eve Saks and wears really ugly glasses.   There’s a lot of language, some fairly up close sex scenes, and a look into the 1980s gay-world.

It’s a very good movie and while McConaughey gets most of the credit, I thought Leto was perfect in his role.
