Last Vegas

Last Vegas – A childhood foursome –  Billy, Paddy, Archie and Sam (Michael Douglas, Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, respectively) go to Las Vegas to host Billy’s first bachelor party.  Billy is Palm Beach tanned with super white teeth and a gold chain around his neck, and he’s marrying a 32-year-old.   There are several jokes about old age, it doesn’t totally rely on that for its humor.  One of my favorites though is when Billy says he’s calling Lisa, Sam says “What?  She’s got her own phone?”

After Archie wins big at the casino with half his pension, the management – hoping to get some of the winnings back – treats them like hip hop stars.  Soon convinced they are East Coast mobsters. with names like Billy Bones, Knuckles, etc.,  they get a wild and crazy party.  But what adds depth is the relationships.  Sam’s wife gives him a free pass to go to Vegas in order to get their marriage back on track, Archie’s son treats him like he’s an invalid, and Billy and Paddy keep falling for the same woman.  Mary Steenburgen as Diana, a lounge singer, helps them in a couple of ways.

It was really better than I expected.  Kind of shows that getting older can be fun, especially when you do it with the right people.
