The Way, Way Back

The Way, Way Back – A good family movie about 14-year-old Duncan (Liam James) who’s spending the summer with mom Pam (Toni Collette) and her boyfriend Trent (Steve Carell).  Duncan is going through an awkward stage, a bit of a dork  and doesn’t like Trent.  There’s plenty of reason to not like Trent, he’s the biggest a-hole ever, a major jerk,  so unlike Carell’s usual roles as a goofy lovable guy.  He’s a cheater and has a bitchy daughter, too.  Allison Janney is next door neighbor Betty,  a loud-mouth boozer, slightly obnoxious but good-hearted.

Duncan gets tired of watching the adults in his life act silly and irresponsibly.  Goes to Water Wizz, a water park, and is hired by Owen (Sam Rockford) who seems to innately understand what Duncan’s going through.    In addition to the friends he makes at Water Wizz, he and Betty’s daughter Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb) have a little crush thing going on.  With Owen’s help, Duncan realizes that he’s much more than a three on a scale of one to ten.

It’s a sweet, funny movie with a quality cast.
