Blue Jasmine

Blue Jasmine –Cate Blanchett (Jasmine French/Jeannette Francis) is more than excellent as the high-strung, high-maintenance, anxiety ridden, rich pampered wife.   Husband Hal (Alec Baldwin), financial guru (think Bernie Madoff) cheats everyone.  She looks the other way until she finds out he’s cheating on her, too.  She moves in with sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins), who she’s always looked down on and  continues to do so.  She pops more pills and drinks more Stoli martinis.  She talks to others, even though they are not there.

Told in a back and forth way so do keep up.  Some really good performances. Ginger and ex-husband Augie (Andrew Dice Clay) and boyfriend Chili (Bobby Cannavale) are all true to life.  So is Peter Sarsgaard as wealthy Dwight Westlake, a wannabe congressman.

This ranks right up there with Woody Allen’s best picture ever, Midnight in Paris.  I heard several people afterwards saying they thought it was sad/depressing/classic Woody Allen.  I thought it was very funny.  And it’s accompanied by Allen’s favored jazzy-Louis Armstrong music.
