Before Midnight

Before Midnight – This is a sequel to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset –neither of which I’ve yet seen, but that will be rectified soon.  Couple Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy), now in their 40s, are vacationing in Greece with friends.  Jesse has taken son Hank to airport to return him to Chicago.  He contemplates moving back to Chicago to be more involved in Hank’s life.  Celine is considering a possible dream job in Paris where they now live with their twin daughters.

The entire movie is conversation.  When with the friends, topics included marriage issues and virtual sex.  When just the two of them it ranges from their early years to which one has cheated on the other, to whether or not they’ll stay together for the rest of their lives.  They say some very hurtful things to each other and they say some wonderful things to each other.  It’s smart and funny (especially when they’re playacting)  in an idyllic setting and I can’t wait to see the other two movies.

Be sure to watch their little girl as she sleeps in the back seat.
