Man of Steel

Man of Steel – It’s Smallville on steroids with lots of destruction. A baby is born on Krypton, a planet that’s about to go bust because it’s used up its natural resources. The baby’s parents (Russell Crowe plays dad Jor-El) decide to inject baby Kal-El ‘s cells with a codex and send him to another planet so he can keep the Kryptonite race alive. Jor-El then sends General Zod (Michael Shannon) to the Phantom Zone because he is one nasty man. Like we’ve been told before, Superbaby ends up in Kansas where he’s found by a nice farming couple (the Kents are played by Diane Lane and Kevin Costner). They name him Clark, and he keeps his amazing abilities pretty much under wrap for 33 years. Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane (Amy Adams) is saved by this hulky guy (Henry Cavill) when she’s reporting on an alien spaceship and traces him back to the farm. It’s a nice story but a very long story. Some parts are comical, like Clark first learning to fly, and a scene that reminds you of the shootout at the OK Corral. Flying machines look like big crabs with pincers. We learn that the big “S” is actually a symbol for hope on Krypton. It’s interesting, too, how sometimes Zod and the big guy appear to ascend upwards. The end has Clark being hired by Perry White (Laurence Fishburne) at the Daily Planet. Man of Steel II could have Clark and Lois with several little Kryptonians running around saving what’s left of Earth.
