The Place Beyond The Pines

The Place Beyond The Pines – This is like a play with three acts.  Ryan Gosling is “Handsome Luke” a motorcycle stunt performer, traveling from carnival to carnival.  Back in Schenectady, NY, he learns he has a year-old son with former girlfriend Romina (Eva Mendes).  Auto repair owner hires him as a mechanic, then suggests he might like to rob banks since he’s so good at riding bikes.  I would have jumped to that conclusion, too.

He’s pretty good at the robbery thing until he gets cornered in a house and meets up with rookie cop Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper).  Cross kills his first “perp” in the line of duty, and we’re off to another storyline.  Cross is a son of a judge. He wrestles with whether he was the first to draw his weapon or not even though he’s hailed as a hero.  But he soon gets with the program.  Fellow cop Ray Liotta is so believable as Deluca, a very dirty cop.

Third act – 15 years later, the sons of Luke and Avery meet in high school.  And by this time, you’re ready for it to be over.  It’s connected but disjointed.  What I got out of it was, if you put a cop, a criminal, and a politician in a bag, shake ‘em up, out comes three pieces of the same cloth.  There’s some beautiful scenery – New York is a pretty state.  Although Gosling’s body was covered in ugly tattoos, there are some nice shots of Cooper’s bejeaned behind.
