The Hobbit

The Hobbit – Takes place 60 years before The Lord of the Rings.  Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) is persuaded by Gandalf the Wizard (Ian McKellan) to go with a group of 13 dwarves to take back their mountain from Smaug the Dragon.  Bilbo doesn’t really want to do this as he is quite comfortable in his picturesque little English cottage-y home.  Along the way they meet lots of goblins including three trolls who remind you of the Three Stooges, just not nearly as handsome.  It’s not very scary or suspenseful at all.  In fact, I found it excruciatingly slow – almost three hours worth.  There are several similarities to the Harry Potter movies, except the special effects aren’t nearly as high-quality.

Gandalf and Gollum are quite good.  It’s a bit hard to understand Gollum sometimes but the riddle playing game is really fun.  Cate Blanchett stands around looking marble cool and making sure her dress is draped just so.  Elijah Wood makes a brief appearance as Frodo.  There are two more of these to go.  I do hope Peter Jackson puts a little more oomph into the next two.
