Anna Karenina

Anna Karenina – Those Russians sure take their love seriously.  Aristocrat  Anna Karenina (Keira Knightley), married to 20-year-older Alexei Karenin (Jude Law) for nine years, is a little bored by the relationship.   Her brother played by Matthew Macfayden, who has been playing around for years, may be the catalyst for her restlessness.  Along comes Count Vronsky (Aaron Taylor Johnson) and a mad, passionate affair begins.  She’s shunned by society and becomes increasingly obsessive.  There are a couple of other story lines intermingled, all about love in one form or another.

It’s all very grand and theatrical.  The costumes are absolutely wonderful – the hats, the furs, just beautiful.  Ms. Knightley’s neck was made for strands and strands of pearls.  A lot of it was filmed in Russia and it’s very Dr. Zhivago-ish in many places.  Some of the outdoor scenes in fields of waving green grasses and Anna and Alexei dressed in white are dreamlike.  Great acting, very good movie.
