The Perks Of Being A Wallflower

The Perks of Being A Wallflower – Smart, shy Charlie (Logan Lerman) is entering high school, shortly after his best friend committed suicide.  He’s soon befriended by Patrick (Ezra Miller) and stepsister Sam (Emma Watson – Hermione in Harry Potter).  They’re seniors but recognize that Charlie is a bit different like them.  Patrick’s boyfriend is a football player still in the closet and terrified what his dad will do if he finds out about him.  Sam made some bad choices when she was a freshman. The threesome bond over music after Charlie gets high with his first encounter of brownies.  I didn’t know people still did brownies.  Both Sam and Patrick can really dance, and are in the drama club’s version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The movie has been likened to The Breakfast Club and I think it may play out as that.  The kids learn a few life lessons like realizing they can’t fix anyone.  Really good performances by Emma and Logan.

Patrick was my favorite character.  Kate Walsh (hot doctor on tv) plays a suburban housewife and mother with Dylan McDermott as her husband.  Paul Rudd plays Mr. Anderson, English teacher.  Joan Cusack has a small role as therapist.

One of the quotes “we accept the love we think we deserve” sure beats the heck out of “love means never having to say you’re sorry”, doesn’t it?
