The Bourne Legacy

The Bourne Legacy – Although based on the Bourne series, this movie is totally different from the book.  Eric Byer (Edward Norton) is overseer of CIA dirty operations and he decides it’s time to eliminate all the Operation Outcome assets who are known by numbers instead of names.   They’ve supplied these guys with  blue and green pills to enhance their physical and mental abilities.  I always thought Bourne’s extreme abilities were natural, kind of like Clint Eastwood.  A yellow pill is developed that will cause immediate death.   Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner), Number 5, comes across program participant Number 3 in a remote cabin and narrowly avoids being blown to smithereens.  Realizing he’s the target of his own organization, he cuts the tracking device out of his stomach and hand feeds it to a wolf.  Okay, Clint probably couldn’t have done that.

Dr. Marta Shearing (Rachel Weisz) is the only one to escape from the research lab after one of the scientists working on these yellow pills goes berserk and kills everyone around him.  Cross and Shearing – she’s accused of treason – team up and try to outrun all the many bad guys.   And run they do, by foot and by motorcycle.  If nothing else, go see the movie just for the motorcycle chase – it’s hellacious.  Some of the same people in the Jason Bourne/Matt Damon episodes are around.  David Straithairn (Noah Vaser) is supervisor of Operation Blackbriar.  Joan Allen makes a teeny appearance.

Renner does a great job as an action figure but I really liked Edward Norton as the ruthless supervisor.  Albert Finney and Scott Glenn also star.
