The Dark Knight Rises

Dark Knight Rises – Eight years after the last Batman venture, Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is now a reclusive cripple.  Former orphan and now Officer John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) knows Wayne’s true identity and gets him back in the game after he discovers Wayne Corporation is no longer sending checks to the local orphanage.

A really bad guy called Bane (Tom Hardy) gets Catwoman  (Anne Hathaway) to steal Wayne’s fingerprints.  Bane and his gang break into the stock exchange and use the prints to bankrupt Wayne.   Instead of concentrating on the robbers, the silly cops go after Batman.  Bane wearing a strange mask which makes it very difficult to understand him and figure out what the heck his problem is, then sets about destroying the infrastructure of Gotham.

After Bane beats Batman to a pulp, it appears he wishes he had stayed a recluse.  It’s a very long story and there are some messages, not all are  clear.  There’s a lot of explanation about why Bane is the way he is but is it actually him the explanation is about?  Hathaway occasionally gets it right but mainly she comes across as mean-spirited and annoying.  Her seductive look doesn’t work at all.  I much prefer her as a princess.  Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth adds humor and heart.  Marion Cotillard, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman are all excellent in their supporting roles.

Overall it’s pretty good, just could have lost 10-15 minutes.   A couple of extreme action scenes, especially the opening one where guys jump out of one plane and rappel down to another, a la Cruise in MI on the outside of a building.

There’s the possibility of a fourth movie, maybe with Batman or maybe with Robin which is Officer Blake’s other name.
