Madagascar 3 Europe’s Most Wanted

Madagascar 3 Europe’s Most Wanted – Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller) wants to get out of Africa and back to NYC where he reigned as King of the Zoo.  The whole gang (Marty, Gloria, Melman) heads to Monte Carlo to round up the penguins who are raking it in at the casinos.    Soon, animal-control Capt. DuBois (Frances McDormand) is sniffing around like a bloodhound, wanting to add a lion’s head to her collection.  Outsmarting her, they join a circus and then buy it.  Unfortunately it’s a circus on its last legs.  Alex  inspires them to try something new and extreme circus is born.  They learn they can do the impossible. Doing it so well, they get a contract to tour USA and  end up back in the Big Apple.  Once home, they find that “the way it used to be is not the way it was.”

The first third of the movie is kind of slow even with a car chase.  Parts are a little corny as opposed to clever.   And for some unknown reason, it  trashes Canadians.  But the second third picks up considerably.  Naturally, some of the best moments are from Chris Rock.   I loved it, too, when the inspector brings the spotlight down on herself and has an Eva Peron “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina”  moment.

Bet you can’t resist singing “Afro circus, afro circus, polka dot, polka dot” and /or “I like to move it, move it” as you’re leaving and beyond.
