Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows – I’ve never been a big fan of Tim Burton and vampires are way down on my list of faves, so why did I go see this movie?  Oh, yeah, Johnny Depp.  Well, even the talented Mr. Depp cannot save this silly, tedious story.   Back in the 1700’s, the very wealthy Barnabas Collins (Depp) is turned into a vampire by his former girlfriend, Angelique(Eva Green) – a witch, when she realizes his heart belongs to another.  She kills off the love of his life and banishes him to a coffin for a couple of centuries.  In 1972, he finally escapes and turns up at his family’s now decrepit castle.  Angelique has reincarnated several times since they last met and here she is again, still holding the same grudge.

There’s a bit of an Addams Family vibe overall. The whole thing just never comes together, actors seem to be in a play instead of  a movie.  There’re some 70’s hippies, some good 70’s music – including “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” which I’d swear was from the 60’s, and a sex scene that should have been hilarious but wasn’t.  Alice Cooper is in it as himself and he looks pretty good.  Depp has his usual eye shadow on.  Helena Bonham Carter’s part as a psychologist seems to have been put in just because she’s Burton’s wife.  And a werewolf was thrown in apparently just for the heck of it.

Sorry that I have to say it’s a disappointment, but that doesn’t mean I won’t go to see Johnny’s next movie.
