The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games – In case you haven’t heard, this is the movie to see this year.  Set in the very distant future, North America is no more.  A post-apocalyptic society is now governed absolutely by The Capitol.  Each year to feed the blood-thirsty and to show who’s in control, 24 teenagers, two from each of the 12 Districts,  are selected to participate in The Hunger Games – the world’s biggest reality tv show.    Sort of a combination Survivor and American Idol.  Instead of being voted off, they kill each other off until only one is left standing.

Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteers when her younger sister’s name is drawn.  She and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) are then sent to train under Haymitch (Woody Harrelson).  Even though this is the future, knives and bows & arrows are their weapons of choice, and the hairstyles & clothes are garish neon colors and they match.  Emceeing the games is Stanley Tucci who takes blue hair to a whole new level.

Most of this was shot in North Carolina, although I’m not sure where they got that high-speed railway.  It’s highly entertaining – just hope it’s not a blueprint for the future.  May the odds be in your favor.
