Man On A Ledge

Man On A Ledge – Several things are just totally unbelievable here, actually the whole premise is, but it is still an enjoyable movie.  Some of the breaking into a building via the elevator shaft and into a safe are very much like that in Tower Heist.  What happens is ex-cop Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington), sentenced to 25 years in prison, escapes when they let him out to attend his father’s funeral.  He then climbs out on a hotel ledge threatening to jump to prove his innocence in theft of a $40 million diamond owned by a Trump-like developer (skinny, skinny Ed Harris).  He says he was set up by the real estate mogul who needs the  insurance money to stave off bankruptcy.  It takes a long time for this all to be revealed.

Elizabeth Banks is the detective called in to negotiate him down.  If you’re the least bit squeamish about heights like I am, it does get more than a bit intense.  It’s a toss-up as to who wants him to jump more, the crowd or the media.  Kyra Sedgwick plays the sensationalism reporter.  Jamie Bell (Billy Elliott, Adventures of Tin Tin) is brother Joey Cassidy and his girlfriend, who shows an awful lot of boob – I mean no one dresses that way when they go to break into a safe to retrieve a diamond – have interaction that is sometimes just way too cutesy.   She stops to put on lipstick and he does the “Really?” thing.

All ends well, bad cops are killed, brother’s girlfriend gets huge diamond ring, father is not dead after all, etc.  Many of the paid critics didn’t like this, but who believe them anyway.
