Joyful Noise

Joyful Noise – It’s a great big gospel music concert.  Anything with Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, two stars who appear to be “just folks”,  in it can’t be all bad even with a weak plot.  Small town, hard times, church choir always loses at national competition.  Several stories going on – Latifah is ViRose with a daughter who gets involved with Parton’s (Jeremy Jordan) grandson, both can sing their pants off.  ViRose also has a son with Asperger’s, and a husband who re-upped in the military just so he could have a job.  Kris Kristofferson is Parton’s husband, only shows up for a few minutes total.  His voice is shot, but I don’t think we’re supposed to notice.

It feels like a lot of pieces tossed together and it doesn’t always flow smoothly.  Like the part about the failing hardware store, or the part about the kids fighting.  Apparently, they did the music first, then wrote the scenes around that.  But if you just go for the music or buy the soundtrack, you’ll like it and come out feeling good.  Dolly wrote several of the songs.  Some fancy dancing in it, too.
