The Descendants

The Descendants – Set in Hawaii with some good  island music, not like Tiny Bubbles, Matt King (George Clooney) is not very good at being a husband or a father.  He’s a descendant of Hawaiian royalty, which I thought was Duke Kahanamoku.  The family is owner of 25,000 acres of virgin island land, King is sole trustee, and the heir cousins are planning to sell it.   After learning his wife isn’t going to make it from a boating accident, he finds out from his daughter that she was cheating on him.  He then sets off on a search to find the wife’s (married) lover who is a real estate agent looking to make a really nice commission from the sale of said property.

Shailene Woodley does a great job as Clooney’s oldest daughter.  She has a boyfriend whose main claim is that he “always has weed.”  Beau Bridges is perfect as one of the cousins.  The way Clooney played the angry betrayed husband was different – I couldn’t get a grasp on what he was feeling most of the time.

Of course, he looked really good most of the time, except when he was running in flip flops – not even he could carry that off.

It’s an interesting movie, about family relationships.  It may not be for younger kids if you don’t want them to hear certain language.   It’s got a lot of humor, a couple of emotional scenes.  I remembered the guy who plays the wife’s dad as a detective back in the 70s on the Banyon tv show.
