The Help

The Help – If you read the book, you’re going to like this movie. Even if you didn’t, I think you’re going to like it. Many of us remember the Sixties as the “make love, not war” decade, but there was this other side where black people were still thought of as lesser human beings. Some folks in the South had black housekeepers/nannies and treated them as family, some didn’t. This story takes place in Jackson, Mississippi where Skeeter (Emma Stone) decides to write a story from “the help’s” point of view. It’s not preachy, it’s fun yet it does make you stop and think about how far we’ve come and how far we have to go with our silly prejudices whether against blacks, Jews, gays, or Junior Leaguers.

I predict this movie will have two to three Best Supporting Actress nominations – Viola Davis, Cicely Tyson, Octavia Spencer as Minny, Sissy Spacek, Allison Janney (West Wing) and a two to three year old, played by twins, who is phenomenal. And this little short dude named Leslie Jordan (remember him on Will & Grace) is only on for a short time but is excellent. Really superb acting by all. Go see it!
