Blue Valentine

I saw this a couple weeks ago and still can’t figure out what I thought of it. It’s done in switch-back fashion from today when the couple is married with a darling daughter, and a few years ago when they first met. Ryan Gosling is Dean who falls for Michelle Williams, Cindy, after one look. She takes a little persuasion. Yet I never figured out the beginning attraction and even less, why the marriage started failing.
He’s a high school drop-out working for a moving company, later becomes a house painter where he’s able to drink on the job – he considers that a major benefit. She admits to having had her first sexual experience at 13 and a social worker says “That’s pretty common.” Hello, where have I been living?
It is a movie that you can have some good conversation about. Ryan wears wife-beater undershirts early on, and then he has these little glasses in later scenes where he looks like a serial killer.
And just so you know, there’s a lot and I do mean a lot of sex scenes. You see Michelle pretty much from A to Z (only Y is missing).
